SOILWORK – Brisbane, Australia 31st October 2019
After postponing earlier in the year, the time finally came for the Swedish Melodic Death Metal powerhouse group SOILWORK, to descend upon Brisbane. Is there a better way to spend Halloween?
The night opened with Byron Bay band FROM CRISIS TO COLLAPSE, touring their newest release ‘The Seventh Tree’. This Extreme/Heavy Metal 5 piece displayed an immeasurable amount of stage presence and energy, particularly vocalist Angus Carter, who has every inch of available stage covered. Yet another underrated Australian band, who I would highly recommend not only supporting their live shows, but also purchasing of their music.
Next up on the bill were the Melbourne Thrash Metallers DESECRATOR. Smashing the stage with a classic thrash sound, complete with high-pitched vocal warbling and fast, angry drumming, reminiscent of early Testament. Desecrator are one of the best Thrash metal acts on offer in Australia and hope to see more of them.
At 10:20, came the moment where SOILWORK took to the stage to the title track of their latest album Verkligheten, transitioning into Arrival. Playing other notable tracks such as ‘Full Moon Shoals’, ‘Stålfågel’ and their latest single, ‘Feverish’, the audience were pumping fists, raising horns and opening the pit.
However, the defining part of this performance began from the moment the band broke into one of their most notable songs, ‘Stabbing The Drama’. The Brisbane crowd were screaming along with Björn, and the mosh pit almost completely stopped every chorus, as the venue filled with a crowd of voices in unison.
Overall, I was extremely impressed with all the performances I saw and, again, happy with the Brisbane metal heads and the reception given to the bands. Soilwork never fail to impress, so it comes as a high recommendation to catch one of their live shows.
Happy (Belated) Halloween!
